Age Spots

Age spots can be a common condition as the ageing process starts. The cause of age spots, also known as liver spots, sunspots or solar lentigines, is primarily the result of exposing the skin to the sun. Often taking on the appearance of small darker patches of skin, age spots can develop on the face, shoulders, arms and hands.

An age spot develops when the skin’s natural pigment, melanin, is overproduced. The sun can trigger this response and over time, the melanin can accumulate in an isolated area and form a darkened patch of discoloured skin. As it is the sun’s UV rays that are responsible for causing melanin to be produced, the overuse of sunbeds and tanning lamps can also produce the same effect.

Age spots are often flat and can be round or oval in shape. They are not a harmful condition but can cause anxiety but can often be confused with other skin conditions, which may be a cause for concern. All skin types can be affected by age spots, but as the skin becomes darker with the formation of age spots, it is often the case that lighter skin tones are more likely to develop this condition.

It is unlikely that once an age spot has developed, it will fade.
